Queen Sim, after learning she is sterile and desperate to appease her mother-in-law asks the shaman, Hong-joo, to help her conceive a child. To achieve this, they convince the shaman, Hae-ran, to have intercourse with the king. When she conceives, Hong-joo uses dark magic to transfer the children from Hae-ran to Queen Sim. Hae-ran discovers the terrible plot and predicts the fates of the unborn children before dying. When they turn seventeen, they will die, and if they manage to survive, everyone they love, or who loves them, shall die a horrible death. After the Queen gives birth to twins, a boy and a girl, the Queen is forced to abandon the princess in an attempt to avert the curse. However, Choi Hyun-seo, a rival shaman of Hong-joo, spirits the girl away and raises her in protected isolation. One day Heo Jun, the bastard son of a slave and a wealthy master, happens upon the hidden princess.
