Wiltshire is famed for its internationally significant prehistoric monuments, including Stonehenge and Avebury. Through the Portable Antiquities Scheme thousands of archaeological objects are recorded every year which, along with traditional archaeological research are rewriting our understanding of the past. Each find recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme adds colour to the history of Wiltshire. We get a glimpse into the every day life in a way which is not visible through many historical accounts. The finds included in 50 finds from Wiltshire give an insight into how our ancestors viewed objects in the past from remarkable discoveries to the functional day to day objects. Each object has its story to tell and this book will focus on fifty of the most interesting finds from Wiltshire reported to the Portable Antiquities Scheme. These include prehistoric hoards, caches of Roman gold, religious objects, forgeries and objects from every day life.
