When the Berlin Wall goes up, half of Gerta's family is on the other side. Her father and one brother were in West Berlin looking for work. Now, she, her mother, and her other brother are trapped in East Berlin. Gerta is desperate not only to be reunited with her father and brother, but also to escape the oppressive regime in the East. Escape, though, is nearly impossible and quite probably deadly.
