Catastrophic SF novel. Seismic activity on an unprecedented scale leads up to a civilisation-crushing earthquake. Matthew Cotter, a smallholder on one of the Channel Islands and something of a hermit by choice, leaves the other survivors of the island and sets off to the mainland in search of his grown-up daughter, walking across the sea bed (exposed by the upheavals of the quake). Has anything of civilisation survived on the mainland? Is his quest just an exercise in futility?
