The Alice Network

2017 | Fiction & Poetry

In an enthralling new historical novel from national bestselling author Kate Quinn, two women—a female spy recruited to the real-life Alice Network in France during World War I and an unconventional American socialite searching for her cousin in 1947—are brought together in a mesmerizing story of courage and redemption.
1947. In the chaotic aftermath of World War II, American college girl Charlie St. Clair is pregnant, unmarried, and on the verge of being thrown out of her very proper family. She's also nursing a desperate hope that her beloved cousin Rose, who disappeared in Nazi-occupied France during the war, might still be alive. So when Charlie's parents banish her to Europe to have her "little problem" taken care of, Charlie breaks free and heads to London, determined to find out what happened to the cousin she loves like a sister.

Inspired by the real-life Louise de Bettignies (aka Alice DuBois, aka Lili), this novel fictionalizes one of the women behind this famous titular group of spies in German-occupied Europe during the first World War, and brings her back to post-World War II France in search of one missing person, as well as resolutions to questions unanswered for nearly 30 years. Good gravy this book is amazing! I was not 100% sure I would like it given the fact it's not typically the type of book I'd read, but I'm so glad I took a chance on it as I learned a great deal from this book and thoroughly enjoyed the ride the book give. I would definitely recommend this book, even if you're not typically one that goes for historical stories.

I loved how Charlie finally came into her own and stood up to her mother. (0 more)
Phenomenal read!
I loved everything about this book. From the cranky Eve to Charlie finally standing up to her mom. I found the storyline extremely interesting. It was so well written I felt as if I were in the car with the characters.

Would I recommend the book? Whole-heartedly and without hesitation. I expected this novel to be well-written and I expected an exhaustive level of research to be evidenced in the final product.
