Autophagy serves to maintain healthy cells, tissues, and organs, but also promotes cancer survival and growth of established tumors. Impaired or deregulated autophagy can also contribute to disease pathogenesis. This is the twelfth volume of the multivolume series Autophagy: Cancer, Other Pathologies, Inflammation, Immunity, Infection, and Aging. The series discusses in detail almost all aspects of the autophagy machinery in the context of health, cancer, and other pathologies. autophagy is more widely accepted as beneficial given its role in eliminating 'toxic assets' and promoting cell viability. Thus, autophagy has emerged as a new and potent modulator of disease progression that is both scientifically intriguing and clinically relevant. In vol. 12 of the Autophagy book series, the role of Molecular Mechanisms in autophagy will be emphasized.
