Joshua Tolson, son of Walter Tolson the car manufacturer, is once again persuaded to invest in a risky enterprise, this time by his friend Spotty, in the USA. Whilst he is starting up this new venture, his old friend, Chas, asks him to be best man at his wedding with the bride being none other than Josh's ex fiancée, whose mother has taken a distinct disliking to him after a rather unfortunate accident involving a river.
With the help of Ellingham, Josh's manservant, Josh must work his way through miserable mother-in-laws, financial crisis and unruly children, all whilst realising he may have found the love of his life. Can Ellingham come up with all the answers this time
