The Couple Next Door

2017 | Fiction & Poetry

This book is the Sunday Times best-seller and WHSmith Book of the Year 2016. People are capalmost alomost anything. "Meticulously crafted and razor-sharp. The Couple Next Door lingers long after you turn the final page." (Harlan Coben). Fast-paced and addictive, The Couple Next Door announces a major new talent in thriller writing. You never know what's happening on the other side of the wall. Your neighbour told you that she didn't want your six-month-old daughter at the dinner party. Nothing personal, she just couldn't stand her crying. Your husband said it would be fine. After all, you only live next door. You'll have the baby monitor and you'll take it in turns to go back every half hour. Your daughter was sleeping when you checked on her last. But now, as you race up the stairs in your deathly quiet house, your worst fears are realized. She's gone. You've never had to call the police before. But now they're in your home, and who knows what they'll find there. What would you be capable of, when pushed past your limit? "How well do we ever know those around us? The Couple Next Door will keep you glued to the pages in search of the answer.

Even then, you'll never guess the truth...until it's too late." (Lisa Gardner).

Lots of twists

Started this book and got into it from the first chapter. A couples baby goes missing while they are having dinner at their neighbours. The husbands business is failing and hes desperate for money, and so I thought "okay I know what happened". This book starts you off thinking it's super predictable, but then more twists show all those involved. At the end when the baby is finally home, it appears all is well and a happy ending.... in the last chapter one last twist means no happy ending after all. All in all easy to read and follow, just 300 or so pages of plot twists that make you want to keep reading to get the full truth.

What a ride! I couldn’t put it down from the time I started to when it was finished.
Great story and twists. Just what I needed to get me out of my reading slump.

Excellent read!
In January of 2018, I told myself I would take more time to read more books this year as a way to get back into my love of reading. This was one of the first books I discovered as I was standing in a line at the grocery store. I picked it up and threw it into my cart and started it as soon as I got home. I couldn't put it down! It had me stuck in its grip and I was too involved in it to even try. I loved all the twists and turns it involved. I was completely surprised to find out who the kidnapper was and what the plan had been all along. It was well written and kept my attention. I plan on recommending this book for my book club.

Predictable ending (0 more)
Decent, but very predictable.
I finished the book within only a few days, but had to push myself to do so, only due to the fact I already knew exactly how it would end, far before I reached the final page. I personally felt the ending was very predictable, and it's not something I feel is worth a re-read. It was a book to add to my have-read-pile, but that's it - nothing more, nothing less.
