Star Wars tie-in. The life and opinions of Darth Plagueis, galactic financier, political mover-and-shaker, secret Sith Lord, Force scholar, and quester after immortality. Expands significantly on a relatively minor reference in Episode III to provide back story to the prequel trilogy, dealing with the collapse of the Republic and the early years of Palpatine (Plagueis is retconned to be Palpatine's Master). The book went through a protracted period of development due to concerns over the extent to which it demystified certain story elements, but was eventually released in 2012.
