A Dog's Purpose

2017 | Fiction & Poetry

This is the remarkable story of one endearing dog's search for his purpose over the course of several lives. More than just another charming dog story, A Dog's Purpose touches on the universal quest for an answer to life's most basic question: Why are we here? Surprised to find himself reborn as a rambunctious golden-haired puppy after a tragically short life as a stray mutt, Bailey's search for his new life's meaning leads him into the loving arms of eight-year-old Ethan. During their countless adventures, Bailey joyously discovers how to be a good dog. But this life as a family pet is not the end of Bailey's journey. Reborn as a puppy yet again, Bailey wonders - will he ever find his purpose? Heartwarming, insightful, and often laugh-out-loud funny, A Dog's Purpose is not only the emotional and hilarious story of a dog's many lives, but also a dog's-eye commentary on human relationships and the unbreakable bonds between man and man's best friend. This moving and beautifully crafted story teaches us that love never dies, and that every creature on earth is born with a purpose.

I cried so much
It was an emotional rollercoaster. Most of the times I cried and laughed at the same it. It was the most touching dog story I've ever read. I started reading it the summer I got my first puppy so it was double emotional for me, but every teardrop was worth it.

Much better than the movie!
This book has so many more stories than what you see in the movie and you really get to understand what the dog is thinking and feeling. It's a very interesting experience.

I had heard a little about this book before I saw that it was being made into a movie. The concept seemed cute and was definitely a good read. I was not prepared for the amount of sadness that I would have while reading and every time Cameron described the aging of the dogs, I found myself petting mine and holding her closer. Well written and easily embraces the view point of a dog from beginning to end and back again. I think all dog lovers should read this but have a tissue handy.

Well it took me awhile to really get into this book. I was 4 or 5 chapters in before I was hooked, so to speak. Once the story really got rolling though I couldn't put it down. This book tells the story of 1 dog who passes several times & is constantly coming back as other dogs. He returns because he is trying to find his purpose. I'm happy to say that at the end of the book, he does just this...in heartbreaking fashion.
I found myself laughing at times & crying my eyes out at others. I definitely looked at my dog & gave him some extra attention as I read. This was a great book!
