Down Among The Sticks And Bones

2017 | Fiction & Poetry

With Every Heart a Doorway, Seanan McGuire introduced us to a vivid intersection of portal worlds containing magic, mystery, and occasional mayhem. Twin sisters Jack and Jill were seventeen when they found their way home and were packed off to Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children. Now, readers will finally get to walk through the doorway that transported the pair to a world of vicious vampires and mad scientists in Down Among the Sticks and Bones, a new Wayward Children novella set before the events of Every Heart a Doorway.

Artist Rovina Cai illustrated a few select scenes from the book for us, bringing to life McGuire’s darkly magical world. Rovina previously illustrated scenes from Every Heart a Doorway, and we’re happy to have her on board again. Take a look at the images below, and read selections from the story!

I’m so happy Jack and Jill were the 2 children to get a book because their backstory was fascinating. I did however find that keeping them straight could be a little difficult, but overall this was really good.

Overall not a bad book - I really enjoyed listening to it over reading - I like the back stories now of those that are at the home, etc. - The twins were actually some of my favourite children in book 1 so getting to know them and their past and their door was actually pretty amazing - I kept getting confused between Jack/Jill I won't lie - and unexpected romance of sorts happened too and I am living - can't wait to continue the series

I feel like this book is so important. This book is for everyone who has ever felt stunted and trapped by the role they’ve been relegated to, and for every person who has ever been disappointed in another individual for refusing to play by the rules
