Pedro Almodovar's third film is an offbeat and provocative black comedy. A cabaret singer finds herself in trouble after her boyfriend dies of a drug overdose and takes refuge in a run-down convent where the nuns have issues of their own: one of them is a trashy novelist, two of them have drug problems, a fourth obsessively cares for her pet tiger, and so on. Originally intended as a vehicle for the producer's girlfriend but due to her limited acting ability the finished film focuses much more on the nuns.
