The success of Toho's series of Godzilla films in the early and mid 1990s inspired Daiei to resurrect their own monster hero, Gamera, and this is the first episode of what proved to be a trilogy directed by Shusuke Kaneko. Japan is plagued by attacks from man-eating reptilian birds, but finds an unlikely defender in the form of Gamera, a giant flying nuclear-powered turtle.
