Lucy Muir (Gene Tierney), a recent widow leaves London with her young daughter Anna (Natalie Wood as a child / Vanessa Brown as an adult) and moves to a secluded seaside house known as Gull Cottage. The house has a reputation of being haunted by a sea captain who committed suicide there.
This is a romantic comedy about Lucy, her daughter Anna, her maid Martha (Edna Best) and Daniel (Rex Harrison) the ghost of the sea captain who is haunting the house. Daniel tries to "haunt" the new residents to make them leave but learns that Lucy really loves his home, as much as he and lets her stay.
