The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

2017 | Children | Science Fiction/Fantasy

A special edition of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams reissued with a bright retro design to celebrate Pan's 70th anniversary. It's an ordinary Thursday morning for Arthur Dent until his house gets demolished. The Earth follows shortly afterwards to make way for a new hyperspace bypass and his best friend has just announced that he's an alien. At this moment, they're hurtling through space with nothing but their towels and an innocuous-looking book inscribed in large, friendly letters: DON'T PANIC. An international phenomenon and a pop-culture classic, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy has been a radio show, TV series, stage play, comic book and film, and is a work of true comic genius. It was the first Pan Original to sell more than one million copies.

Ridiculously amusing
This has been part of my to-read list since forever. And I can now assuredly say that the meaning of life is 42. It's hilariously silly and outright bonkers.

It begins with the end of the earth (sadly), with a sole survivor Arthur Dent, or that's what we think, until he discovers Trillion, the other survivor. Whisked away on the Heart of Gold ship with his friend Ford Prefect (an alien) and his cousin, they gallivant across the universe attempting to find answers. And thus begins an epic adventure.

So it's not as sophisticated as Arthur C. Clarke's status of science fiction, or Andy Weir's level of technical details, and its not supposed to be. It's light hearted, and fun, as Douglas Adams creates a detailed and splendid look at our insignificant existence in the most humorous way possible.

Let's just get it out of the way. This is my favorite book of all time. I've read it 8 times & will probably read it many more times, before my time is due. The book is smart, witty & genius. The characters are funny, quirky & silly. The story follows Arthur Dent, a human from Earth, which was just destroyed to make way for an intergalactic highway. He & his friend Ford, who unknown to Arthur, up to this point, is an alien. They hitch-hike aboard a Vogon ship at the last second before the Earth is destroyed. They are then kicked off the ship & wind up on the Heart of Gold, another ship which has an improbability drive. With this drive, the possibilities are endless. And from there, it just gets better. My favorite character is Marvin, the depressed robot. His negativity of everything & unenthusiastic way mirrors my own views on many things. But some of the best parts in the book are of the book within the book, The Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which is sort of a Galactic Encyclopedia. Except it says DON'T PANIC in large letters on the cover. Entries on poetry & even the creation of the universe are hilarious. And Earth's entry "Mostly Harmless". Anyway, highly recommended. READ IT!

Not as good as I was expecting.
I was very excited to read Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. I even recommended it for this month's book club read. I know it is such an iconic book and so many great quotes and scenes come from it (I remember watching the movie when it came out and I was obsessed with the "So Long and Thanks for all the Fish" song that the dolphins sing... I even had it on a CD) but I just felt as though I was missing something while I was reading through it. Perhaps, I am just not a fan of that sort of dry... British sarcasm.

I have been trying to push myself beyond my typical genre. Science Fiction is generally not one of my favorite, but I thought I would give this book a try since it has been so well received for generations. I’m sure that has to do with it, but I just found myself zoning out when I read. Douglas Adams’ writing style was just a little too… over the top for me. It seemed like the author was just trying to come up with some of the most bizarre names and titles for his characters and locations and it made it hard for me to slog through.

I was ashamed to admit my dislike for the book at book club but I was quick to find that I am not alone in my feelings. None of us particularly cared for the book. Perhaps it is a “millennial” thing? We had also all seen the movie previously and that could have clouded our vision, perhaps when it came to the book.

All that being said, however, I did find some parts of the book a little humorous. I smiled at parts and chuckled a little, but it wasn’t really enough to save the book in my eyes.

Several family members have read this book and it was loved by all. The characters just draw you in.
