I Was Told to Come Alone: My Journey Behind the Lines o

2017 | Biography | Gender Studies | History & Politics

This is a memoir chronicling her early life as a Muslim born and raised in Germany and how her early experiences drove her to not only journalism, but to seeking out the individuals radicalized to follow the ideals of both Al Qaeda, but also ISIS.
It was a fascinating read, and interesting to get the viewpoint of a European born citizen, who always considered herself more German than Muslim.
There was quite of bit research that I did to familiarize myself with some of the names. It was interesting to see witness the ways in which she would interact with the various individuals she interviewed, and brings a new and interesting perspective to the gender politics that exist in journalism, as well as middle eastern politics.
