John Louis: A Life in Speedway

2015 | Biography

A well-known East Anglian scrambles star of the 60s before switching to speedway at the end of that decade when the sport returned to Foxhall Heath, John has served his local team with distinction - firstly as their No.1 rider and, for the past 30 years, as team manager and promoter.Popular John - universally known as 'Tiger' in his iconic striped leathers - did more than any other to put Ipswich Speedway on the map, taking them from the second division wilderness to the very top. As the catalyst and talismanic captain of the Witches, he inspired the Suffolk club to its first celebrated league and cup double triumph in 1976, the year after he was crowned British Champion.John also talks candidly about his unhappy departure from Ipswich in 1981 and the next four seasons spent proving himself all over again in brilliant spells with Halifax and the Witches' great local rivals King's Lynn.As well as recalling 16 years spent riding for his three British teams, JL's intriguing story covers his meteoric rise to international stardom - reaching his first World Championship final (1972) in only his third full season in the sport, finishing third in the individual World Championship (1975), collecting three World Team Cup gold medals for Great Britain (1972, 1974 & 1975) and winning the World Pairs title (1976).
