Couldn’t live without it
I’m one of those people that loves real books. I collect real books, and used to enjoy going to the library and borrowing stacks of books all the time. I always mocked Kindles, because you couldn’t borrow books like in a normal library and I just didn’t see the benefit to owning one. However as time went on, I began to reconsider a Kindle, especially as I found out some of my local libraries were closing down and they had instead launched an e-book borrowing service with a fairly decent catalogue of books. Eventually I caved and bought a Kindle last year in the Black Friday sales, and I’ve never looked back since.

I bought a Paperwhite (3rd gen) and I absolutely love it. The screen is fantastic and is perfect to read in any type of light, and there are enough functions available to adjust the display to meet your own personal requirements. It has only 3gb of space, which sounds terribly small, however I have over 500 books saved on mine and have used only 800mb, so storage space definitely isn’t a problem. The battery life is impressive, to the point where I forget it actually has a battery that needs charging, it lasts that long. It’s fairly light and is so easy to carry around and take out, no matter how small my bag is.

My only criticism is around the user interface itself. I like that it allows you to create collections to be able to sort your books easily and also that it can be easily linked to your Goodreads account. However the interface itself is very clunky and quite slow at times. When you’re used to tapping away on smart phones and tablets, it can be frustrating to navigate through the Kindle’s menus which are a lot slower than I’d like. But that said, the interface minor issues are never usually a problem when you’re reading a book, it’s only on the menu/store screens.

But this is only a really minor criticism. I absolutely love my Kindle, and although I do still enjoy reading normal books, the Kindle is definitely here to stay.

One of the best things I’ve ever bought
Before I got my kindle I was worried I wouldn’t like it due to it not being an actual physical book (the smell, feel etc.) but I’m so glad I went for it. I don’t know what I would do without my kindle now. I still read physical books but I read an equal amount on my kindle.

I also have the kindle app on my phone but I still prefer to read on my actual kindle.

If you’re unsure about getting one I would definitely recommend that you do, you won’t regret it!

Perfect for an avid reader who can't carry all their books with them
I purchased a Kindle Paperwhite E-Reader a few years ago. I had previous thought that "I could never give up holding a book." However, the Kindle has been a lifesaver on trips. It is small, light, and easy to take with me wherever I go. I purchased a case, so I could have the feeling of holding a book and to protect the tech. The Paperwhite looks like paper, but has a back light for when I am in darker spaces. I am able to download books from Amazon instantly as well as get books from my library delivered. In the end, it has saved me a ton of money as I am on several discount e-book newsletters and I can check out many books from the library no matter where I am. My only complaint is that the touch screen has a bit of lag time, but otherwise it is fantastic.

A Solid, Basic E-Reader
I received a Kindle E-Reader from Smashbomb as a giveaway prize. This does not influence my review.

This basic Kindle is a great introductory e-reader for people who want to discover the unique joy that is the ability to carry hundreds of books around with you without the bulk and weight.

It has no screen glare, which is so nice after spending hours looking at your phone. The ability to increase your font size to almost ridiculous proportions is fantastic for people with poor vision. It features a variety of fonts including Open Dyslexic which is a bottom weighted font that is easier for people with dyslexia to read. You can also adjust your page settings including spacing, margins, orientation, and alignment.

The battery life is not quite as good as they advertise IF you are someone who reads a lot. However, it's still good.

The storage is fantastic. You aren't going to fill it up anytime soon.

So there are lots of positives, but there are a few negatives.

The Kindle is very awkward to hold bare in your hand. It's a thin rectangle, and there is just no truly comfortable way to hold it. A cover is a necessity for both comfort and screen protection.

Because this is not a Paperwhite, if you want to read at night, you are going to have to use a booklight or leave a light on.

The method of organizing (Collections) that is Kindle specific... sucks. It needs a lot of work. However if you are a Goodreads user, it's not very important.

Overall, while the basic Kindle isn't personally my favorite (I prefer the Paperwhite), it is a great fairly low-cost choice for readers just getting into e-books.

I hope you get one soon. I agree that reading on your phone is a complete pain in the butt sometimes! But even with having a kindle I still do it anyways! One of my favorite things about Kindle is the syncing across devices, so I frequently start a book at home on my Kindle and finish it on my lunch break on my phone!
