Trotsky remains one of the most fascinating and controversial figures of modern history. This accessible book traces his turbulent life from his birth in a Ukrainian village, through his revolutionary apprenticeship under Lenin, to his ascent to the pinnacle of power as organizer of the Bolshevik Revolution and founder of the Red Army, through his political defeat and exile at the hands of Stalin, to his subsequent attempts to forge a new revolutionary movement and his ultimate assassination in Mexico. Special attention is devoted to an examination of the strengths and weaknesses of Trotsky's theoretical perspectives on such questions as the dynamics of revolution in backward countries, the rise of fascism, and the problem of Soviet bureaucracy, and to a critical assessment of the significance of his life and thought for today.
