The West Coast Main Line from Euston to Glasgow is one of the most famous rail routes in Britain, if not the World. With its various loops and branches, this major traffic artery links huge conurbations such as London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester and Glasgow, while West Coast line has, moreover, always been regarded as something of an 'international' route; Anglo-Scottish expresses such as the Royal Scot having a particularly glamorous public image. Notwithstanding its importance as a major traffic artery, the West Coast Main Line was built in piecemeal fashion by a number of separate companies, including (from London northwards) the London & Birmingham Railway; the Grand Junction Railway; the Manchester & Birmingham Railway; the North Union Railway; the Lancaster & Preston Junction Railway; the Lancaster & Carlisle Railway; and the Caledonian Railway. This new book, the final one in a six-part series, will examine two of these early lines - the Grand Junction Railway and the North Union Railway - which formed a vital connection between the pioneering London & Birmingham Railway and the northerly lines beyond Wigan and Preston.
