My Best Friend's Exorcism

2016 | Fiction & Poetry | Horror

Abby and Gretchen have been best friends since fifth grade, when they bonded over a shared love of E.T., roller-skating parties, and scratch-and-sniff stickers. But when they arrive at high school, things change. Gretchen begins to act…different. And as the strange coincidences and bizarre behavior start to pile up, Abby realizes there’s only one possible explanation: Gretchen, her favorite person in the world, has a demon living inside her. And Abby is not about to let anyone or anything come between her and her best friend. With help from some unlikely allies, Abby embarks on a quest to save Gretchen. But is their friendship powerful enough to beat the devil? (Goodreads)

Oh wow, this book was so good. I laughed, I cried, and I was creeped out. Awesome nostalgia but I do have to warn for some body horror involving tapeworms.
Not to be too spoilery but you may not want to eat while reading this one.

WHY was Gretchen possessed in the first place? (0 more)
Overall, I loved this book. I loved the nostalgia, and the friendship between the two main characters. The book was sufficiently creepy (the tapeworm thing has stuck with me for DAYS), and entertaining.
BUT, the reason I cannot give it a 10 is simply because the book never explains why Gretchen was initially possessed. What did she do to invite the demon in? It was slightly disappointing.

I Received an ARC copy from netgalley for an open and honest review.
I love love love this book, it really is about friendship, love, adolescence, experimentation and of course possession.
There were some real twists and turns that I did not expect and it was a real page turner of a book.
It was well put together and completely from a Abby's point of view.
I loved how Abby was tested again and again trying to save her friend and the ending was a superb ending to this book.
Loved it :)

I have a new guilty pleasure and it’s name is Grady Hendrix. After finishing My Best Friend’s Exorcism, I find myself hungering for more of Hendrix’s work. Fortunately, the audiobook was not read by the same narrator as Horrorstör. Instead, this 80s style book is read by Emily WooZeller – the woman that narrated Shallow Graves.

My Best Friend’s Exorcism reads exactly like a cliché. If you’ve seen any horror film from the 80s, you probably know exactly what I mean. All the way down to the dog. Normally this would put me off, but instead I found it oddly comforting. Totaling only ten hours, it’s not a terribly long read either.

I really wish I had more to say, but honestly with that last description I’ve pretty much said everything. Just take your average 80s horror flick elements and apply them!
