My Pacific Star

2016 | Biography

An enthusiastic recruit, Harry Dean joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force at a turbulent point in world history. Trained to fly as a member of an operational bomber reconnaissance squadron, he took part in the Pacific Islands campaign during WWII. During the campaign, Harry came close to death on numerous occasions. However, he faced danger with an unwavering spirit and formed lasting friendships with his men. The strength and loyalty of their bonds saw them through the most difficult of situations. By the end of the war Harry had completed two operational tours, attained the rank of Squadron Leader and had been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his 'exceptional devotion to duty, enthusiasm and zeal.' This is Harry's account of his time in the air force, and the challenges he encountered in the South Pacific.
