Never So Good

2008 | Film & TV
In a series of deftly-sketched, fast-moving scenes, we are following Harold Macmillan's often haphazard rise to Prime Minister, from Eton (which he hated) through an early flirtation with the priesthood to early success under Churchill and final ascent to the premiership on the back of Eden's Suez disaster. Assailed by self-doubt, scorned by a domineering mother, cuckholded by his socialite wife, 'Supermac' is revealed as anything but super. What emerges however is a surprisingly sympathetic portrait of a decent human being caught up in the coils of power politics.
