Oxenfree

2016 | Action/Adventure | Horror

Macintosh Nintendo Switch PC PlayStation 4 Xbox One

Oxenfree is a single player game that’s equal parts coming-of-age tale and supernatural thriller. You play as Alex, a bright, rebellious teenaged girl who brings her new stepbrother Jonas to an overnight party on a decommissioned military island. The festivities are framed by a dangerous sneak to a forbidden beach, celebrating with friends and navigating prickly situations with enemies. But the night takes a horrifying turn when you unwittingly open a ghostly rift spawned from the island’s cryptic past. How you deal with these events, your peers, and the ominous creatures you’ve unleashed is up to you.

OxenFree
I want to start this by saying that I love OxenFree, I experienced it the first time over a year ago and again recently and that’s what it was an experience. The characters are well written and the story flows seemlesly and my only qualms with the game come with the replay, after the second time you play it through nothing but your choices are different and the game starts to drag but this is very minor and has no impact on the enjoyment unless you are hunting for all the endings and/or achievements

Short to play, but incredibly fun
Oxenfree was a beautifully styled coming-of-age story that pulled the player into the relationships between characters as much as into the drama of the ghost story. At times intense and a little scary (I'm a baby about stuff like that though), but also sweet and compelling. I really wanted everyone to be okay, although I fudged a bunch and not everyone made it out alive.

The actions have consequences aspect is great. The choices felt like realistic situations for the teenagers and each bad/good decision was believable.

Plan on playing this again in the near future to try and better improve my favorite character's chances!

This is a good game, good story, good mechanics. But it's super creepy. Obviously, that's the point and if you like that it'll be great. But I could only play it for a bit before I had to walk away and never went back.

Oxenfree is an extremely well put-together horror game from a new developer, and one that I can find very little fault with. Night School Studios might just be 2016's class valedictorians
