Private Life tells the story of a middle-aged couple that is desperately trying to get pregnant because they have always wanted a child. The film opens with them in a clinic getting tested to see if they are even capable of having a child. What follows is a succession of disappointments as they finally come to the conclusion that they will need a donor egg. In the meantime, their niece-by-marriage, Sadie (Carter), drops out of school and moves to New York to stay with them for a while and pursue writing. They realize that Sadie might be their best chance at having a child.
