The River Trent may be connected by some with a north Staffordshire city, the centre of ceramics or the heart of brewing, or even a well-known bridge near a cricket ground, but it is much more than all of these. Its magnitude isn't like any other in England. Its name comes from Old English, meaning 'the wanderer' or 'the invader' and it carries more water into the sea than any other river. It can rightly be called England's biggest river. Falling from 1,000 feet in the southern end of the Pennines, it glides through Trentham and on to Newark, but don't be fooled by its silvery nature, as the current beneath the surface is deceptively strong.
