Storm Front: The Dresden Files, Book 1

2017 | Fiction & Poetry | Science Fiction/Fantasy

Harry Dresden is the best at what he does. Well, technically, he’s the only at what he does. So when the Chicago P.D. has a case that transcends mortal creativity or capability, they come to him for answers. For the “everyday” world is actually full of strange and magical things — and most of them don’t play well with humans. That’s where Harry comes in. Takes a wizard to catch a — well, whatever.

There’s just one problem. Business, to put it mildly, stinks. So when the police bring him in to consult on a grisly double murder committed with black magic, Harry’s seeing dollar signs. But where there’s black magic, there’s a black mage behind it. And now that mage knows Harry’s name. And that’s when things start to get… interesting.

Magic. It can get a guy killed.

One of my favorite book series. Interesting characters and really good story. Sometimes the tone is dark, but there are great moments of humor in it too. There are also beautiful emotional moments as well which make you care about the characters a great deal. A very good read.

A friend of mine once vaguely mentioned these books as something I might like, but after reading your review, I think I'm going to have to actually read the series!

I just re-read Storm Front, after first reading it - well, I don't even know how many years ago! Shortly after it was first released, I think.

Now, it's important to know that I simply don't re-read books. I find that too boring, most of the time. There are a scant few exceptions. The Liaden Universe books by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller are the most remarkable of them. The fact that I would even consider a re-read speaks very, very highly of Butcher's work.

I'd forgotten far more than I expected, but I suppose that happens, with at least 15 years and goodness knows how many books in between readings. I knew it was a good book, I knew one important part of the ending (I mean, come on - there are many more books in the series, so you KNOW that Dresden lives!), but all else was lost. I wasn't sure I would like reading about old Harry with recent Harry fresh in my mind (I just read the short story "Jury Duty").

If anything, I enjoyed it even more spiced by the knowledge of who Dresden (and Murphy) will become in the future books. I enjoyed the setting, the craft that went into building the whole novel, and seeing how Butcher's skill grew from the first book to the more recent works.

I'm going to go on with re-reading the entire series - I hadn't committed to it before, but now I'm looking forward to it!

If you've been in the realm of the internet that discusses the Fantasy Fiction, you will know about The Dresden Files. This book has been on my list for who knows how long, and I'm glad I've finally got around to it. I wouldn't say this was the best book I've read, but knowing that the series only gets better and better, the bar was set pleasing high for continuing this world. It set the stage for what is to come, and I'm looking forward to discovering more.

First half: 2 stars
Second half: 4 stars

Overall rating: 3 (and a quarter) stars, simply because of how exciting that second half was.

So it's taken me almost a month to read this. Which is ridiculous really, but this isn't my usual genre of book. I like my books to have romance/sex in them and there is a little but not enough to keep me interested in the book for just that.

The first half was a bit boring for me. It was going too slow, plodding along at it's own merry pace but then as soon as we get into the toad-demon and the shadowman and the storms, I was well dragged into the story.

I think I may just be interested enough to carry on with this series.

This book was recommended to me by a friend. I felt that the writing was sloppy at times (or maybe just a bit too casual for my tastes, as the previous book I finished was by CS Lewis), but still a fun read that doesn't drag the way a lot of fantasy novels do.

A great read and an addictive world worth diving into headlong. (0 more)
Suffers only from it being the first novel and the world not quite feeling polished yet. (0 more)
An exellent introduction into Harry Dresden's world
My lowest score for a Dresden novel ad it's only because I read this book after watching the short-lived TV series The Dresden Files. My perception of Harry was skewed by the excellent Paul Blackthorn portrayal and this book suffered because of it, in my eyes.
I went back to reread this book after the second novel came out and realised my error. The book was so much better than I remembered. Harry as a flawed individual but he is very human in that regard and we can identify with him, despite his magical powers.
Give it a read and dive into the world that keeps getting better with every new book, short story and graphic novel.

I adore this book! It made me fall in love with Dresden! I can't wait to read the rest! I kind of want to kick myself for putting off reading this book for so long. The sense of humor and wizardy had me hooked!
