The fourth season of The Avengers is the first to epitomise the show in the form which people still remember: made on film and with a much bigger budget than the earlier seasons. After a brief misstep and a swift bit of recasting, Diana Rigg arrived as Mrs Emma Peel, Steed's latest partner: both she and Patrick Macnee opted to play the increasingly far-fetched plots as light comedy, and the result is a programme which isn't easily categorised: the odd fairly serious episode slips through the net, but stories revolving around killer robots, man-eating alien plants, psychic powers and weather control are common.
