Three years ago, sixteen year old Anneliese, daughter of detective Pieter Vos, disappeared in mysterious circumstances, leaving her father distraught.

Peter's desperate search revealed nothing and resulted in his departure from the police force He now lives on a dilapidated houseboat in the colourful Amsterdam region of the Jordaan, with only his dog for company. Laura Bakker is a young misfit trainee detective and when she hears that Katja Prins, daughter of an important local politician, has gone missing in similar circumstances to Anneliese, she goes to see Vos.

Vos finds himself drawn back into the role of detective, hoping against hope to unearth a clue that might lead him to discover the fate of Anneliese. The daughter he blames himself for losing.
