The Queen's Gambit

2020 | Drama

Drama, based on a novel by Walter Tevis. Eight year-old orphan Beth Harmon is quiet, sullen, and by all appearances unremarkable. That is, until she plays her first game of chess. Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels fully in control of herself. By the age of sixteen, she's competing for the U.S. Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting - forcing her to confront the demons she has carried with her since childhood.

Lavish drama based on Walter Tevis' novel about a female chess prodigy. What sounds like fairly unpromising material - a young orphan discovers an immense talent for chess and rises to take on the world champion in Moscow, confronting her personal demons along the way - is elevated to something really special by the simple method of having a fantastic script, direction, acting and production values.

Looks fantastic, and Anya Taylor-Joy deserves all the accolades coming her way, but the show's real achievement for me is that it manages to capture the excitement and fascination of chess without becoming bogged down in details like the difference between the Orangutan and the Grob openings. The chess sequences are genuinely thrilling: you almost get a sense of what it feels like to have that kind of effortless talent in something. Brilliant TV aimed at people with brains.

Thought I'd check this out, pun intended. Heard very good things about this, everyone seems to be watching this. I was a bit dubious how a short series about a Chess prodigy would make interesting viewing. I happen to like Chess as well.
The story follows Beth a young girl sent to an orphanage and discovers a natural ability for Chess and an addiction.
The show is very stylish, with the 60's fashion, Cars and Music. Anya Taylor-Joy has a look that just grabs your attention with her striking red hair. It's interesting, especially if you do play yourself, although it does progress as you would expect.
You'll breeze through it in no time.

I loved this series. The acting is wonderful, and the protagonist is absolutely absorbing. Anya was outstanding in her role. I don't like chess, but her passion made me look at chess with a different perspective.

Wow. I don't know if I can say anything else. This. Was. Incredible.

I cannot recommend this series enough, and I think that everything about this is amazing. I can only wish that I had created it.
