Total Recall (1990) reviews from people you don't follow

"Get your ass to Mars."
So, I didn't actually see this film until the remake was in the process of being made. The film is based upon 'We Can Remember it for You Wholesale' by Phillip K. Dick (which is excellent). Arnold Schwarzenegger isn't an award winning actor, but he was completely entertaining (as he is in most films). The weird, early 1990s SFX where a little bizarre, e.g., the face generator. Overall, it's entertaining and well paced, and I may just watch it again this afternoon.

Total Recall (1990) reviews from people you don't follow
Forget the rather pointless Colin Farrell-starring 2012 remake, this is the original (and best) of the 2 movies to share the name, itself based on the Philip K Dick short story 'We Can Remember It for You Wholesale' - it bears little in common with that story, however, other than the idea of false memory implants!
Starring a pre-T2 Arnold Schwarzenegger alongside Sharon Stone and Michael Ironside, the main plot of this is actually open to interpretation: are these events actually happening, or is Arnie's character of Douglas Quaid dreaming them? Every thing that happens after he visits Rekall is left deliberately open to interpretation, even down to the film ending with a white out instead of a black out ...

I'm a sucker for Arnie films and remember being thrown by this movies twists and turns, effects have aged very badly but the action and fast pace help to excuse some ropey moments, overall an enjoyable ride chock full of Arnies best one liners and good direction from Verhoeven of this Philip K. Dick adaptation.

Arnold is great in it (2 more)
Sharon Stone looks great
Great are they or aren’t they plot
One of Arnie’s best
By 1990 Schwarzenegger was in full stride and could do no wrong. He even tried his hand in comedy (Twins) with Danny De Vito and won audiences. Futuristic sci fi is where Schwarzenegger’s real strength is (The Running Man, Terminator Franchise, Eraser, Predator..) and the perfect example of this (other than Terminator 2) is Total Recall. It has everything from very quotable lines to an intriguing story which raises the bar on previous Schwarzenegger entries (originally a Philip K Dick story). The basic story line is a construction worker call Doug Quaid dreams of going to Mars but when he finally gets the chance things might not all be what they seem. Is he a secret agent? Is he on Mars? Did he get a divorce? And will those people get air? Sure it looks dated now but this was considered one of the most expensive movies made at the time and the dated graphics can be sidelined for seeing what happens to Schwarzenegger’s Quaid. If you buy the special edition dvd, you’re in for a treat also as Schwarzenegger provides his take on what a commentary is. Check it out.
