Michael Hirst’s Vikings is inspired by the sagas of legendary chieftain Ragnar Lothbrok and his family. It returns as Ragnar’s sons are plotting their next move after avenging their father’s death in season four. Having dispensed with his brother Sigurd, the first part of season five begins with Ivar asserting his leadership over the Great Heathen Army, while Lagertha still reigns as Queen of Kattegat. The stage is set for civil war.
