Working Stiff

2015 | Fiction & Poetry

It's a tough job but somebody's got to do it - dead or alive. Bryn Davis knows working at Fairview Mortuary isn't the most glamorous career choice, but at least it offers stable employment - until she discovers her bosses using a drug that resurrects the clientele. Now Bryn faces being terminated...literally. Bryn is given the chance to take down the bigger problem, pharmaceutical company Pharmadene, which treats death as the ultimate corporate loyalty program. She'd better do it fast before she becomes a zombie slave. A real working stiff.

Bryn Davis knows working at Fairview Mortuary isn't the most glamorous career choice, but at least it offers stable employment--until she discovers her bosses using a drug that resurrects the clientele as part of an extortion racket. Now, Bryn faces being terminated--literally, and with extreme prejudice.

Wit the help of corporate double-agent Patrick McCallister, Bryn has a chance to take down the bigger problem--pharmaceutical company Pharmadene, which treats death as the ultimate corporate loyalty program. She'd better do it fast, before she becomes a zombie slave--a real working stiff. She'd be better off dead...

A new spin on the idea of zombie or living dead. This is a reread for me and I love the series. Rachel Caine is definitely one of my favourite Authors. This has strong female lead with a good storyline.

I have read the Morganville series, that’s what encouraged me to look for more of her writing. I loved how Morganville was written.

Bryn takes a job in a funeral directors, but the first day does not go as planned. What follows is a recipe for crazy.... nanites, the walking deceased (not zombies) and a romance in the making!

Really well written, some great characters too... I found the start a little slower than I would normally enjoy, but stuck it out and really enjoyed the book

I first came across Rachel Caine when I was reading her Weather Warden books which, by and large, I all found to be rather enjoyable. This was the first of her books not in that series that I have read: unfortuantely, I found it to be a distinct drop in quality from that other series.

I found this to be actually quite morbid in places, and also seemed to take forever to go nowhere in particular. To me, it lacked the beating heart (pun intended) of a good story!
