Wristcutters: A Love Story (2006)

2006 | Comedy | Drama | International

91 mins

A film set in a strange afterlife way station that has been reserved for people who have committed suicide.

Zia (Patrick Fugit) decides to take his life after Desiree (Leslie Bibb) breaks up with him because he couldn't believe it would get any worse. It turns out it does.

In the afterlife where those who commit suicide go everything is far worse than it was in the living world. Random furniture is scattered throughout the landscape, which is mostly desert wasteland. He works a crappy job at a pizzeria and has a bizarre roommate. About the only good thing he has is his friend Eugene (Shea Whigham), who he met at a bar during a strange game people play with each other trying to guess how a person killed themselves, and he kind of accepts where he is at in this strange place.

Until word comes to him Desiree has offed herself. Zia embarks on an trip with Eugene to find his ex-girlfriend in the hopes to get her back. Yet things take a turn when they pick-up a hitchhiker, Mikal (Shannyn Sossamon), who claims she has to find whoever is in charge and explain she doesn't belong. She never intended to die.
