Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2099 KP) rated A Spoonful of Murder (Soup Lover's Mystery, #1) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
Lucky Jamieson is trying to figure out what to do with the soup restaurant she inherited from her parents. But when the cook is arrested for murder, she has to figure out who really did it before she loses everything.
I liked the characters and I wanted to like this book. But overall it just felt like it moved very slowly. It needed more clues, red herrings, and twists along the way.

The Chocolate Lady (94 KP) rated The Shipping News in Books
Oct 5, 2020
For those of you who enjoyed my recent review of Annie Proulx’s short story collection that includes the story “Brokeback Mountain,” you might also be interested in seeing my older review of her National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize winning novel “The Shipping News.” In that review here, you can read why I thought this book not only deserved that prize, but also why I believe she truly earned the Library of Congress 2018 award for American Literature. https://tcl-bookreviews.com/2014/08/09/get-roped-into-this-story/

The Chocolate Lady (94 KP) rated Little Breton Bistro in Books
Oct 7, 2020
Nina George’s newest novel is about Marianne, a German woman who, at the age of 60 decides to kill herself while vacationing in Paris with her husband. Of course, she fails at her attempt, and that (as the poet says) has made all the difference. This novel is as charmingly written as her previous one, but I think I liked that one just a little bit better. Find out why in my newest book review on my blog here. https://tcl-bookreviews.com/2018/06/09/leaping-late-in-life/

Mothergamer (1521 KP) rated Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch in Video Games

Fantastic fantasy role playing game
I love this game so much and I've played it twice. The story is quite good and the game play is a lot of fun. The artwork of the game is beautiful and the music for it is great. There are tons of side quests to do along with the main story and just exploring is a lot of fun. It's a wonderful game that is enjoyable to play. Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2099 KP) rated I am Invited to a Party! (Elephant & Piggie, #3) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
Piggie is invited to her very first party, and Gerald says he knows all about parties. But are his ideas right or not?
This is another fun and funny book in Mo’s Elephant and Piggie series. Things just get crazier as they go along until we hit the perfect ending. Once again, the words are easy to sound out and the illustrations add much to the humor of the story. Great for reading and rereading.

I love this book so much. I remember it freaked me out when I was younger and it still provides some nice chills.
So, Rose (full name: Rosecleer) is a normal high school student until she starts having dreams that feature Nancy, a girl she barely knew but provided comfort to when it was really needed.
Several red herrings pop up as Rose tries to figure out why she is having these visions and also keeps herself from being run out of town when Nancy is discovered dead and several more girls disappear.

The Chocolate Lady (94 KP) rated Last Christmas in Paris: A Novel of World War I in Books
Oct 5, 2020
In the summer of 1914, when England went to war with Germany, both the solders and the loved ones they left behind, were certain it would end quickly - by Christmas. Unfortunately, it took over four years for peace to come, and the only small respite both those at home and those away had, were letters to and from their loved ones. In this novel, Heather Webb and Hazel Gaynor bring us a story of just such correspondence. Read more about this lovely book in my review here.

One day, a cap peddler decides to take a break by napping under a tree. When he awakes, he finds his caps have been stolen by monkeys who were in the tree he slept under. Can he get them back?
I loved this book as a kid, and I found it just as delightful now. The writing is simple, so a beginning reader could handle it. The story is fairly straightforward, but it is still filled with fun. And the illustrations are delightful as well.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2099 KP) rated First-Degree Fudge (A Fudge Shop Mystery #1) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
Ava Oosterling is setting up a fudge shop in part of her grandfather's tackle store. But when a visiting actress is found dead with a piece of Ava's fudge in her mouth, she's got to find the killer before she is arrested for murder.
The book was going along okay, although Ava could be a bit annoying. But then at the half way point, there was a twist that made no sense, and Ava went off the deep end. I wanted to like this debut, but it was another disappointment.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2099 KP) rated Mama Rides Shotgun (A Mace Bauer Mystery, #2) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
Mace and Mama are taking a trip on the historic Florida Cracker Trail, living (almost) as the cowboys did centuries ago. But when one of Mama's high school boyfriends is murdered when the group stops at his ranch, danger seems to be stalking Mace and her family.
I enjoyed this light mystery and am wondering why I didn't get back to this series sooner. The characters are charming and Mace shows some real growth here. The plot could have been a bit better developed, but the book was always entertaining.
