Suswatibasu (1703 KP) rated The Lonely City: Adventures in the Art of Being Alone in Books
Sep 25, 2017
Hauntingly poignant, such a great exploration into loneliness
Such a fabulously enticing book exploring the 1970's and 1980's New York scene while revealing the writer's own issues of dealing with loneliness. From the introvert but flamboyant Andy Warhol, to the artist David Wojnarowicz's AIDS activism, Olivia Laing brings to light the spaces between people and the things that draw them together.
The chapters on painter Edward Hopper and Henry Darger are particularly poignant, especially as Darger was practically invisible, and only known after his death as his paintings were discovered in his accommodation. The author's own story remains mysterious. The book epitomises loneliness, despite the bright lights of the big city.

I have a soft spot for bounty hunters and space. Put those two together and you have a recipe for magic. This novel was exactly up my alley and I loved everything about it. After reading Katherine McIntyres Stolen Petals, I was jonesing for another story similar. This was a perfect match. With a fierce female lead and a deliciously devious male lead, the couple burned up the pages. Its not erotic however, having a plot interesting enough to keep my attention when they werent setting the book on fire.
Overall, the novel reads quick, but it is rather enjoyable. If you like strong female bounty hunters and the men who love them, I recommend it.

Mark Halpern (153 KP) rated Forrest Gump (1994) in Movies

EPIC
Tom Hanks plays Forrest Gump plays a young man who is very slow but, smart growing up in the south during the 60's with his mom (Field). His life through school, the Vietnam war where he befriends his LT (Sinise), his lust for the love of his life Jenny (wright), to coming home and becoming the shrimp king of the world and just on more historical adventures.
The movie is kind of set to Billy Joel's "We didn't start the fire" as a ton of these historical events take place during this movie in which forrest has some connection with. The movie aslo has one of the best 60's soundtracks set to it of all time.

AVAILABLE NOW!
Like most other reviewers, Im digging the way this was laid out. Its set up as if were reading a blog, we get the post and then we get the comments too. Its fun and informal. My only issue with the blogging aspect of this is that the characters type like idiots and occasionally use abbreviations I dont understand.
There are a number of characters in this novel when you include all the blog family. Our main characters are Fickel, Mysterious Hottie and Burly Bear and I didnt particularly like any of them...
