"Until age eroded memory, I could recite “Sailing to Byzantium” at any hour in any pub in the world. When I first went to Ireland in the 1950s, I toured all the sacred sites as pilgrim: Sligo, Innisfree, Drumcliff, Ben Bulben, Galway, Thor Ballylee, Coole Park. I get goose bumps still just by saying the names."

"Baldwin’s grand novel, Another Country, delivers beatnik-era 1950s, with characters who are on all sides of black, white, gay and straight, twisting complex lives into a magical taffy of perfection. By humanizing the bourgeoning civil rights movement and changing attitudes towards women, Baldwin creates a historical portrait of America that is a great key to understanding where we come from."

"I love this drama by Nicholas Ray, shot in CinemaScope. James Mason plays a professor and family man who has a troubled relationship with over-the-counter drugs. Bigger Than Life is a modern take on U.S. society in the 1950s that was unusual at a time when Hollywood and television were invested in depicting picture-perfect nuclear families. The film is both disturbing and fascinating."

"Read this memoir for a glimpse of a vanished country (ours, circa 1940s/1950s/1960s) that had an entirely different notion of education and the arts, i.e., a country that valued them and honored them and supported them with money and muscular institutions, which institutions, in turn, produced courageous and original national artists like Glass – who is also, turns out, a wonderfully gifted, honest, and amiable writer."

"That's another fine mess you've got me into …"

Drama based around what would become Laurel and hardy's swan-song around the UK in the latter part of their year during the early 1950s, this is impressively cast, with John C Reilly getting the part of Oliver Hardy down pat.

Less successful, perhaps, is Steve Coogan's portrayal of Stan Laurel, maybe solely because the actor is more familiar to me?

I really liked this movie but I did also find it difficult to get past Steve Coogan and me thinking of Alan Partridge

O Captain! My Captain!
Late 1950s set drama, with the late Robin Williams in full-on dramatic mode (as opposed to his usual comedy persona) as a schoolteacher with unconventional methods in a boys prep school who teaches his charges to 'seize the day'.

Later made a scapegoat when tragedy strikes, this is one of the earliest films I can remember where he, well, acted rather than clowned about!

Watched last week and I did like it I was surprised by the twist near the end of the movie where u discover the the secret of this 50s community it looks so perfect but there's some thing off about it. Best part of the movie is Florence pugh brilliant performance the set design the costumes everything about it is so the 1950s overall good film

A fun quick read. Sarcastic and a bit witty not afraid to make fun of itself. Set in Chicago and while it is "present day" i.e. 2000s up electronics and magic don't always get along, Harry at times lives like he's in the 1950s and older.
I found it refreshing that a character could have old fashion values but still for the most part, let a person do the things they need to.

2007 remake of a 1950s original (which I haven't seen), and - I'm sorry to say - , this just didn't do it for me.

Despite starring two stellar actors in Christian Bale and Russell Crowe, I found this to be slow, plodding and just, well, boring; never really taking off or holding my attention at all.

You want to see a good film/Western (in all but name) by James Mangold? Stick with the infinitely-superior 'Logan'.
