"Maybe the best film ever made in Europe about modern Europe, by my favorite of all European directors, Carol Reed. It’s a companion piece to its follow-up, The Man Between, my other favorite Reed film; both films present a totally pessimistic take on the moral collapse of a divided postwar Europe, with no heroes or possible redemption. I’ve probably seen it fifty or sixty times since it first appeared on TV in the 1950s, and still watch it from beginning to end whenever I get the chance. With the exception of the miscast Orson Welles (how could Alida Valli ever have loved such a mean-spirited, charmless, smirking killer?), the players, led by Joseph Cotten, Valli, and Trevor Howard, are at their best, as are the finest collection of German-Austrian actors ever assembled. It contains one of the greatest musical scores and has easily the greatest ending to any film ever made."

"My mom used to play this and it's funny because recently she told me that she didn't even like it very much. But I liked it a lot. It's not like this is the definitive girl group compilation, it's just that I grew up with it. And it means something to me, I guess, because I've covered two of the songs [Dionne Warwick's 'Don't Make Me Over' and Barbara Lewis' 'Hello Stranger']. I probably didn't realise just how important it was to me back then, but the songs have stuck to me over time and so I've come to understand its importance. All these playful and soulful performances, they're still very inspiring to me even though I was five or six when I was listening to it a lot. There wasn't a lot of music my parents played that I enjoyed at that age, so it's in there pretty deep. It's very 1950s, very glittery, very Phil Spector-y. It was pretty formative."

This is a snapshot in time from Audre Lorde’s childhood to young adulthood. She is born to immigrant Caribbean parents, and grows up in New York City. She leaves home to forge her own path at a young age, and lives in Mexico for a while during the McCarthy era. Throughout the book, she learns to love herself and accept her lesbianism. This book tells us what it was like to be a lesbian in the 1950s and more so, what it was like to be a black lesbian. It shows how Audre worked hard for everything, from working to provide for herself, to studying. She was fiercely independent, and even in hard times she doesn’t fall back on her parents.

This book is a real snapshot in time, and I loved reading it. This is such a readable memoir. I really enjoyed the pieces of poetry that she has added to the prose that she wrote around that time too.

Definitely a book worth reading.
