Mrs. Pollifax and her friend Farrell are off to Syria to try to find out what happened to Amanda Pym, who vanished after stopping the hijackers of a plane diverted from Egypt. They are constantly being watched and much evade their followers before they can even make contact. With the thinnest of leads, can they find the missing young woman?

This is Mrs. Pollifax, so that means we are off on another wild and fun adventure. Set in the world of 2000, it’s interesting to read this take on the politics of the Middle East back then. The plot features a couple of familiar plot points, but I didn’t care since it was so fantastic to be enjoying another adventure with Mrs. Pollifax. Sadly, this is her last adventure, but I like to imagine she is still out there saving the day against overwhelming odds.

The Philosophy Book

With over 2000 years of history, no book could seek to cover each and every aspect of philosophical thought.

What this does, instead, is to give a broad overview of the main works of the main thinkers (SOcrates, Plato, Descartes, Karl Marx, etc) of any particular era, with the book itself split into 6 main sections, as follows:

1) The Ancient World (700 BCE - 250 CE)
2) The Medieval World (250 - 1500)
3) Renaissance and the Age of Reason (1500 - 1750)
4) The Age of Revolution (1750 - 1900)
5) The Modern World (1900 -1950)
6) Contemporary Philosophy (1950 - present)

Nicely illustrated throughout, and with a little bit of history on the thinker themselves, this is a good intro for anybody interested in the subject. (Speaking personally, the closer the philosophy got to contemporary years, the less interesting I found it - I was more interested in the likes of Plato, Socrates and Descartes, for instance, than in Jacques Derrida).

Shaft (2019)
2019 | Action, Crime
Samuel L Jackson in the role he is most suited for. Jackson plays John Shaft, an unfiltered New York City detective turned private investigator. Shaft works the mean streets of Harlem although not the gentrified nouveau riche version that exists today. In this sequel to the 2000 remake/continuation of the 70s classics, the booksmart JJ, John Shaft Jr, hires Shaft to help him investigate the "suicide" of his best friend, an Afghan War vet and former heroin junkie. Using his special set of streetwise skills, Shaft shows his son that he may not know as much as he thinks he does especially when it comes to women. Together, the Shafts uncover the conspiracy that the Supertroopers found 18 years ago but in Harlem with a major Latinx drug dealer who tried to destroy Shaft's life 20 years ago. While not great, this film at least is entertaining in ways most of the films this summer is not.
