Albany, New York, January 1879; two young girls go missing during a deadly blizzard and are only found weeks later, when the city is amid a devastating flood. This new novel by Robin Oliveira follows some of the same characters from her 2010 best-selling novel, “My Name in Mary Sutter” but if you haven’t read that, don’t let that stop you from reading this book. Find out why in my latest #bookreview of “Winter Sisters” on my blog here.

During the Gilded Age, New York’s high-society shunned the “Nuevo Riche” no matter how much wealth they had. This was true until Alva Smith decided to turn around both her own fortunes and the standing of the Vanderbilt family by marrying their last eligible son, William. Author Therese Anne Fowler tells this story in her latest book “A Well-Behaved Woman,” and you can find my review of this historical fiction novel, on my blog now.

Nina George’s newest novel is about Marianne, a German woman who, at the age of 60 decides to kill herself while vacationing in Paris with her husband. Of course, she fails at her attempt, and that (as the poet says) has made all the difference. This novel is as charmingly written as her previous one, but I think I liked that one just a little bit better. (Thanks for the free book, @PRHGlobal / @prhinternational) The name Kennedy is known worldwide, and descendants of that famous family are in the public eye to this day. However, there’s one Kennedy who we know little about, mostly due to her early demise. She was named Kathleen, but everyone knew her as Kick. Kerri Maher’s debut book “The Kennedy Debutante” is a biographical historical fiction novel about this fascinating woman, and you can read my review of it on my blog now. https://tcl-bookreviews.com/2018/10/27/home-again-kathleen/

They say “it takes a village to raise a child,” but further to that, I think it takes a worthy cause to build a community. Libby Page’s debut novel “The Lido” is about the fight to save a local swimming pool that brings two women together in this common struggle, despite the sixty-year age difference between them. You can read my review of this book that is being called the “feel-good debut of the year” on my blog here. https://tcl-bookreviews.com/2018/08/11/diving-in-together/
