I'M NOT IN LOVE is the first book in the Don't Let Go series and we start off with Remi and Tristan. Both of these guys have major baggage going on, but manage to find some solace with each other. Will it last, or will they push each other away?
Remi and Tristan are opposites in so many ways. Remi has money but no real family. Tristan has his family he adores, but they are struggling to make ends meet. They meet by chance and sort of fall into a friendship that becomes so much more, although neither will admit it.
I found the baggage for both of them to be realistic. The supporting characters were also fantastic additions, especially if Uncle Tris got hurt! The pacing was perfect for the story and I was definitely left wanting more, not ready to leave Remi and Tris behind.
I don't know if this series will focus on them or on other pairs, but I really hope we catch up with Remi and Tris, no matter what. A brilliant start to a new series and I can't wait to read more. Absolutely recommended.

UNEXPECTED is a standalone novel about two men who bring to life the 'opposites attract' saying. Both of them have been hurt badly in their pasts but have reacted and coped with it in very different ways. Their story is about how they bring together these two opposing sides and make it work.
Walker seemed to be this brash, outgoing character, only interested in a good time, whilst Colin was more buttoned-up, throwing himself into his work to get over his heartache. As the story progresses, you realise (as they do) that these characters have more in common than they first originally thought.
I also really liked the supporting characters - Jimmy, especially. However, the actions of Alan and Dustin made me shake my head. Best friends know how to push their friends, but making them go on something so completely not what Colin liked... Hmm.

Walker seemed to be this brash, outgoing character, only interested in a good time, whilst Colin was more buttoned-up, throwing himself into his work to get over his heartache. As the story progresses, you realise (as they do) that these characters have more in common than they first originally thought.

TWO SOULS UNITED is a short and sweet novella that fills the gap between books 5 and 6 and tells of the courtship between Glarys and Sam.
Glarys has been looking after the Royals for years but time has moved on, and they now have their own lives and families away from the Mansion. Glarys liked Sam when she first spoke to him at Latimus and Lila's bonding ceremony but she thought he was only speaking to her to be nice. Sam wanted to be more than nice but when he suggested they meet up, Glarys suggested he bring Jack. Sam took this to mean she wasn't interested and years passed.
Even during this novella, you not only catch up on the others but also see two deamon attacks by Bakari, which keeps the whole series moving along nicely. It moves along at a fast pace, giving you the story and not lingering over certain acts or thoughts for too long.
For a novella, you get a lot of story -- from romance to PTSD, from deamon attacks to a spa day. Definitely recommended by me, but PLEASE read it in order or you'll get spoilers.

FUBAR is the fifth book in the Life Sucks series and we continue Maggie's story, who we met in Clusterf*ck. She is suffering with her pregnancy, afraid to take medication in case it hurts the baby, plus a whole host of other worries. And then there's Carter. He was attracted to Maggie from the get-go but the timing wasn't right. It's not entirely right now, but he's not waiting any longer.
This was a great straight-shooting story where miscommunication doesn't really happen. Not between our main two, anyway. This was a great straight-shooting story where miscommunication doesn't really happen. Not between our main two, anyway. Carter wants to be there for Maggie but doesn't always appreciate it when the tables are turned. He does admit to his caveman tendencies though, which made it funny. Add in the ex-boyfriend and the parents who abandoned Maggie when she was only little, and you have an action-packed story.
FUBAR is fast-paced but flows smoothly. The characters are all well-rounded, and some are known from previous stories. Martha is my favourite character of all, and I would love to see more of her.
A great addition to the series and definitely recommended by me.

ALEXI is the first book in a new series about a group of Kraken shifters who are called in to assist the police on several missing people cases - or is it a serial murderer? Danik is worried it will be swept away as a serial killer when he just knows they are still alive. Alexi soon puts those fears to rest once they realise they are mates. No way will Alexi go against Danik like that.
So, what do you have? A group of close brothers who tease each other constantly. Different personalities I am looking forward to getting to know. A possibly crooked police force. Missing paranormals, presumed dead, but oh so alive according to Danik. It's all here, and it's FUN.

STRONGER THAN HOPE is the first book in the Chesapeake Days series, and we are introduced not only to the town but the inhabitants, including long-term Linc and new blood Nate. Linc is a bisexual widower, raising his son alone. Nate is revamping his (deceased) uncle's coffee shop and needs help because of the work involved. That isn't how they meet though, oh no. They meet when Nate nearly runs Linc down as he is looking for his rental accommodation.
These two are incredibly sweet together, and Nate shows that he is strong in ways that are not just physical. Linc's grief was incredibly well explained and nuanced, showing there isn't a time limit on mourning someone's loss.

These two are incredibly sweet together, and Nate shows that he is strong in ways that are not just physical. Linc's grief was incredibly well explained and nuanced, showing there isn't a time limit on mourning someone's loss.
Whilst I loved both of them for varying reasons, I really wanted to slap Linc upside the head for not communicating with Nate, who had already proven he would listen with a calm ear and attitude. Now, I know the upset needed to happen for the story, but still... LOL
A strong start to the series and I honestly can't recommend this highly enough. Can't wait to continue and see who finds love next.

WAKING UP LOST continues the Adirondack Spirit series with Mehitable's son, Noah. He can't move as fast as his brother, Moses; nor can he see ghosts. What he does do is travel whilst asleep. And I deliberately use that phrase as there is no way he could walk!
He doesn't have it easy in that the girl he likes has been 'claimed' by the town bully, whose sister has set her sights on Noah! So Noah gets warned twice - keep away from his girl and keep away from his sister. He tries to, bless him, but Dorcas isn't so easily persuaded. In fact, Noah does everything he can to have a normal life, but his travels make that increasingly difficult.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Noah's tribulations although there was no explanation given for them. Instead, Noah also becomes adept at speaking with ghosts, just like his mum, and they help get him out of some deadly situations.
This is old-worldly and otherworldly, both things that stir my interest. I enjoyed meeting up with old friends and learning about new ones. I found this book to be gripping and I have no hesitation in recommending it.

So Noah gets warned twice - keep away from his girl and keep away from his sister. He tries to, bless him, but Dorcas isn't so easily persuaded. I don’t envy whoever has to narrow down the books on the Women’s Prize 2022 from the long list to the shortlist this year. The books I’ve read so far I’ve enjoyed all equally.
The Sentence is, amongst other things, a book about books. It’s also a book about Tookie, who works in a bookshop and is haunted by a deceased customer. Tookie has a colourful past, which involves imprisonment after it was discovered she had smuggled drugs over county lines, strapped to the corpse of a friends boyfriend. She didn’t know about the drugs, but she certainly knew about the dead body! Prison gave her plenty of time to read, and she leaves prison with a huge knowledge of literature.
On release Tookie gets a job in a Native American bookshop, and marries the Police officer who arrested her. Like her, he is also Native American.
This is a book of two halves: before and during the Covid-19 pandemic. The ghost of the customer, Flora, remains in the bookshop for most of the book, whilst Minneapolis sees a lot of important things going on: the death of George Floyd, Black Lives Matter marches, the Covid-19 epidemic, isolation from friends and family, illness, near death experiences and the importance of heritage.
I loved this book. Like I’ve said, I’m just glad that I won’t have to decide the Women’s Prize winner. I still have some books to read from the long list, which I still want to read even though the shortlist has been announced - so watch this space!

Setting the bar pretty high already for the title of best-book-I've-read-this-year

I heard (or read) somewhere a while back that the Dresden Files series was meant to run for about 20 books, with Jim Butcher having the general gist of the series as a whole already in mind. If that's true, then we must be on - or approaching - the home stretch, with this as book number 14 in the series.
And what a book it is, too.
By far one of the best books I've read this year, this starts with the previously-thought-to-be-dead Harry Dresden returned to health (of a sort) and life by Mab, the faerie Winter Queen, who is holding him to his promise to be her Winter Knight (which is also the reason why he was 'killed' (note the inverted commas) at the end of <i>Changes</i>, 2 books ago).
The Faerie play a larger role in this than in any book since, perhaps, <i>Summer Knight</i>, with characters from that earlier entry returning. Indeed, there's so much back-story here I wouldn't recommend picking this one up without reading any of the previous: normally, I'd count that against a novel, but not in this case. This one also leaves a couple of plot threads left hanging for the next entry, which I'm already looking forward to.
Let's hope it's not another year before I get reading it!
