THE LAST SON OF VENUS is the first book in a new series. It is hot and dark, and leaves you wanting more!
We start off with a young anxiety-ridden Alex, on his first trip abroad and lost in London. Things start going a bit strange for him and he has no idea what's going on. What's worse is he can't get hold of his parents for their advice. Nikos has been Alex's Guardian for a while now but this is his first interaction with him directly. Add Alex and Nikos, together with Jin - a queer descendant of Hekate, against an evil sect disguising themselves as the church, and you have an action-packed story that will keep you turning the pages.
This is definitely character-led - you get the steadiness of Nikos, the quirkiness of Jin, plus the anxiety of Alex. These characters change as the story progresses. Obviously, the biggest change is Alex, but Jin changes too!
Told from varying perspectives, it allows you to see the inner workings of just what's going on. And, trust me, there's a lot. There are multiple players in this story and not all of them are black and white.
A brilliant start to a new series by a new-to-me author. I absolutely recommend this book, and I can't wait to see what happens next!

HIS BOY TO TEASE is part of the Naughty or Nice Season Two collection, and we rejoin the boys from the La Trattoria Di Amore series. This time, it's Smithy's turn and we find out more about why he is single and what it is he wants. We get a small prologue as Jessie and Smithy meet for the first time, and then we jump to current times as Smithy is trying to find Jessie.
One thing I will say is that Kaden (from Made to Submit (La Trattoria Di Amore #3) is not the nicest or most considerate in this book. Now, I know what you're thinking - this isn't about him. But in a way, it is, because of his direct actions towards his staff members. Anyway, moving on...
As for Smithy and Jessie, well, brace yourselves, my friends, because they move at breakneck speed. This is understandable considering Smithy's past, but I was surprised at how Jessie seemed so okay with it. There are steamy moments between these two, but the 'big deed' isn't done until later in the book. This doesn't detract from the storyline in any way.
There is a bit of internal dialogue with both Jessie and Smithy questioning themselves and the choices they make. That is about the most angst-worthy you get.
On the whole, I enjoyed this story and have no hesitation in recommending it.

As for Smithy and Jessie, well, brace yourselves, my friends, because they move at breakneck speed. THE STARFOLK ARCANA is the first book in the Starfolk Trilogy and we are introduced to a contemporary world where Beth has never felt as though she fitted in, due to her gut feelings and intuition. On her birthday, she goes to a TV show that her friend got tickets for. There, she sees a celebrity, Amelia, who speaks a lot of nonsense but nevertheless manages to sway over the audience apart from Beth. It is also there she meets Jonan for the first time. Life is about to get a whole lot more interesting.
I wouldn't call this a romance book, but rather a story with romantic elements. I wouldn't call this a romance book, but rather a story with romantic elements. There is a lot of back and forth between Beth and Jonan as they try to work together, past lives and tarot cards notwithstanding. The whole world seems to be under Amelia's spell, and they need to stop it. It is an uphill battle though, as it is easier to give in to fear than to fight it.
Full of twists and turns, you are never completely sure who to trust. I understood Beth's frustration and hope for the general population but I found her blindness to her roommate to be just as irritating for me.
It does end on a bit of a cliffhanger which definitely left me wanting more. A great read I thoroughly enjoyed and have no hesitation in recommending.

LITTLE TREASURE HE HIDES is the first book in the Little Paws Haven series, and I want to return there now!
I will say, Gabai got off to a very poor start. I didn't like how he acted when he first saw his mate; nope, not at all. However, luckily for me and for Asher, he realised what a pillock he'd been and changed how he treated Asher. After that, I soon warmed up to the big ole teddy bear who will not hesitate to protect his mate - even if Asher is more than capable of looking after himself. With his backstory, it shows how much he appreciates the care and affection. Yes, he can take care of himself, but he can relax and let Gabai do it, knowing he has his best interests at heart.
There wasn't a part of this story I didn't like (apart from what I've already said). I loved how Gabai's side of the story - with the attacks at his club - was handled. And Asher's just broke my heart before rebuilding it piece by piece.
I have just one question for the two amazing authors though - please, please, PLEASE tell me Rocco gets his story. I want to give him a hug!!!!
Full of amazing characters, action, and a brilliant storyline, this is highly recommended by me. Another jewel in the crown!

I will say, Gabai got off to a very poor start. I didn't like how he acted when he first saw his mate; nope, not at all. CRYSTAL SHARD is the first book in the Paladins of Crystal series, a new reverse harem series that promises to be a blast! In a nutshell, Crystal is living with her brother and s-i-l, in a dead-end job. One bad day later and she's hiding in a garden when her muse, whom she didn't know she had, decides to take matters into her own hands. Crystal is transported to a new world and ends up meeting five royal Paladins (Buff Lords). There you go.
Of course, there's more to it than that. I am hoping there will be a book for each of the Paladins but this one was Anton's. Crystal feels attracted to all of them but Anton is the one she spends the most time with. The sparks fly but Anton can't act on his wants and needs, not if he wants his mother to live.
The world-building here is exceptional, just what I've come to expect from this author. The characters are multi-dimensional and, in Crystal's case, snarky and headstrong. This leads to some fantastic situations that you can see clearly.
This book ended way too soon for me. I feel it's going to be a series to read one after the other! Absolutely fantastic. I loved every word and can't wait to read more. Highly recommended by me.

Of course, there's more to it than that. I am hoping there will be a book for each of the Paladins but this one was Anton's. Love is never easy, and it is sometimes dark and filled with pain.
THE SIGNS WE MISSED is a young adult, standalone story, that deals with some dark themes. It comes with trigger warnings so please take note of them.
Love is never easy, and it is sometimes dark and filled with pain, especially if you are experiencing something for the first time and are unsure of just what's happening. Cruelty can be through ignorance, not always deliberate. This is the position Sean finds himself in with Luke. He has feelings but doesn't know what to do with them.
Told mainly from the perspectives of Sean, Luke, and Shayne, the missing gaps are mostly filled in and you get a rounded story. To be honest, I wasn't exactly sure how Fly's story fitted in for most of it, nor if the destructive relationship between her and Shayne was sorted, but it was still an enjoyable read - if a dark storyline can be called as such.
This is not light and fluffy, to even think that would be to do it a disservice. Instead, it is a gripping book that deals with self-harm, bisexual awakenings, and eating disorders, to name just a few. If you can cope with those, then I definitely recommend you take a chance on this novel.

Marvel's first horror (themed) movie?
So, Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange?
He's now appeared in six MCU movies, including this one (which is only his second solo outing). In order, they are:
Doctor Strange (2016)
Thor: Ragnorak (2017)
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
As well as that, he's also appeared in perhaps the best episode of Marvels animated 'What If ...' series, titled 'What if ... Doctor Strange lost his heart instead of his hands?@
The reason I mention the latter?
Because, roughly halfway through this, Dr Strange falls through the Multiverse (first shown on the big screen in No Way Home): one of which looks very much like the animation style used in said series.
The films also relies heavily on the aftermath from TVs WandaVision (although a brief reprise of that is given by Wanda herself, with Vision barely getting a mention), in that Wanda is now desperate to find her missing children and has the Darkhold in her possession.
She also goes on to show why she is one of - if not the - most powerful beings in the MCU, which is where a lot of the horror elements in this story come into play. It is a Sam Raimi film, so if you've seen The Evil Dead (or even the original Spider-man trilogy, in particular Spider-Man 2), you know the type of thing: crazy camera angles, unsettling imagery, zombies, the damned ....
Oh, and it also definitely - finally! - opens up the MCU for the inclusion of the X-Men or The Fantastic Four.
