Roxanne (13 KP) rated Thank You for Smoking in Books

This book was an ok read, it took me quite a while to get into it as the writing style is very different to what i'm used to. I found the story to be quite jumbled and sometimes I just had no idea which of the characters were speaking, I had to sometimes read a page a couple of times in order for it to sink in. Some of it a found quite funny but other bits I didn't really understand. The novel is very political, which probably explains why I kept losing interest (not to say it wasn't interesting at all- which is why I gave it 3 stars, I did like it, mainly because it was just different). The story had some good twists but I do believe that the ending was very unrealistic.

Great premise but poor execution, and poor ending.
Some of the concepts and the worldbuilding were fantastic. Some of the names and places were a little too crazy (using old Mayan language as a basis? Teixalaan is the easiest of the weird words you'll find). Some of the world systems and culture didn't seem to make sense but I went with it anyways.
I was debating on rating it 4 stars but the ending was so poor. See spoiler below for some high-level spoils.
<spoiler>No huge climax, no really interesting turn of events, no facing the alien threat, no facing your darkest fear or something. Just... blah.</spoiler>
Anyway I won't be reading any sequels and I almost wish I would have stopped 3/4 of the way through when I understood the politics fully. Good luck.

2.5 stars.
Dark Lady I: 3 star
Dark Lady II: 4 star
Dark Brother: 1 star
Dark Lady I, I was equally annoyed that I had to read about Silvio having sex with someone else and fascinated about the way he went about it all.
Dark Lady II, I really enjoyed because, hopeless romantic that I am, it was about Silvio and Stefano and them getting closer.
Dark Brother, well, I know Silvio's a little strange in his sex life, but really?
Your own brother? What the hell?! I didn't even read it, just skipped to the next morning
I must admit that though this was my least favourite volume so far that I am still intrigued and wanting some sort of happy ending for these two so I will continue reading to see how it all plays out.

3 stars.
The first 40% of this took me a long time to get into. I don't know why. Maybe it was the trial, maybe it was the lack of Joe, but after Mason was introduced I became more intrigued with what his role would be in the series (although I've read reviews by friends of future books in the series, so I guess I already know) and by the end, I think I was starting to prefer him to Joe (Joe's jealousy in relation to Mason was starting to do my head in) and I want to read future instalments in this series to see what happens next with this threesome.
I feel I have to add something about Miss Mildred! What a, erm...strong-willed old lady. That bit at the end almost had me crying with laughter.

Ooh, book 3's gonna be Aaron and Kreed!
Anyway, back to this. I'll give it 3.5 stars.
I loved Mitch, I liked Cody, I just wasn't so keen on the case--I know it carried on from the first book and that I should have wanted to know who wanted to hurt Jace and Cole but I didn't get into that aspect. Hence the 3.5 rating.
The author has this way of writing really hot scenes between her characters and Mitch was one of hell of a bad-arse and I loved him in this. Cody grew on me, too, after those first few hesitant chapters. I also grew to like Kreed and Aaron so their story will definitely be being read and hopefully this case will get fully wrapped up in that one.
P.S. Look at that cover!!

I dunno how I feel. 2.5...3 stars? Either way I liked the start, up until about the half way point, it was bad boy biker/mechanic and young, innocent baker coming together with an instant combustible attraction and I liked it quite a lot, though Jake's growling and controlling ways were annoying after a while.
It was the second half of the story I wasn't so keen on. The sort of rush to their relationship--the engagement--and the stalker. Now I know that we need some sort of dilemma in a story but it didn't work for me in this. And then who it actually turned out to be was a shock. I certainly didn't see it coming.
I liked Kase so I may have to read the second book in this series at some point.

Rolling Stone's 392nd greatest album of all time
This album should really have been titled "That Will Do". It really is a half-hearted slap in the face to the fans waiting on the band's last album. They had clearly given up by this point and hashed together some songs quite quickly and with scant regard to quality. Yes Let It Be and Get Back are excellent songs, but the fact is Lennon and McCartney could toss out songs like that by the dozen. The rest of the album is truly dreadful and half-hearted. Rolling Stone themselves said so at the time, giving it 3 stars (out of 5), so to include it as one of the greatest albums of all time is quite insulting to everyone else not included (and those towards the bottom of the list).
