Military romance seems to be my favourite thing to read at the moment. I love sexy alpha males and hot 'hold their own' heroines and this book does not disappoint. I enjoyed the technical details that seem to bring a scene to life and there's no shortage of steamy bits too. This fast became a book I couldn't put down.

Only one issue I had with this book and that was the phrase 'flaming fish balls' , once or twice I could have handled but it's constantly cropping up, I thought it was because the author wanted a substitute for the 'F word' , nope, I was wrong because ' f''king flaming fish balls' was in it too. This did detract from my enjoyment and so I give this book a 3.5 Stars instead of a 4. I would certainly read others by this author and I would recommend this book.

I couldn't decide whether or not to give this book 3 or 4 stars, so I'm going to give it 3.5 stars.

I thought this was a good read for the most part as I'm a big fan of horror books. I loved that there were a few scary bits in Heart-Shaped Box. I liked the character of Craddock and could actually imagine him to be a real ghost.

Jude, Marybeth and Anna were all believable characters as well.

What I didn't like was the BIG age gap between Jude and the girls he dates. That's just a personal thing though.

I felt that this book was lacking a bit of something although I can't put my finger on it. It's a great idea for a story but there's something else it could've had.

I'd still recommend this book for all fans of the horror genre.

Great premise but poor execution, and poor ending.

Some of the concepts and the worldbuilding were fantastic. Some of the names and places were a little too crazy (using old Mayan language as a basis? Teixalaan is the easiest of the weird words you'll find). Some of the world systems and culture didn't seem to make sense but I went with it anyways.

I was debating on rating it 4 stars but the ending was so poor. See spoiler below for some high-level spoils.

<spoiler>No huge climax, no really interesting turn of events, no facing the alien threat, no facing your darkest fear or something. Just... blah.</spoiler>

Anyway I won't be reading any sequels and I almost wish I would have stopped 3/4 of the way through when I understood the politics fully. Good luck.
