Stacey Halls’ latest book The Household, is set in a house for “fallen” women. This house did actually really exist: Urania Cottage was set up by, amongst others, Charles Dickens and Angela Burdett-Coutts.

Charles Dickens doesn’t feature in this book, although he is mentioned. This wonderful novel is all about the women.

Angela has been stalked for many years, her life made a misery by a man that no one takes seriously. He has been released from prison for another crime (as stalking wasn’t a crime until recently), and Angela is dreading the moment when he turns up again. And you just know it’s going to happen.

There is also the matter of a missing girl: one of the inhabitants of Urania Cottage has lost contact with her young sister, and she’s missing from the big house she worked in.

This book was captivating - the attention to historical detail, the development of the characters (particularly Angela and Martha), the way that with a modern eye, it’s supremely frustrating that young women of any class were held in such low regard. But these women do fight to get the life they want, and that must have been a reasonably rare occurrence.

This is well worth a read - another fantastic read from Stacey Halls!

"Now, I can tell you about some women writers who truly are fantastic. One is Anna Kavan. She writes stories like I approach Land of a Thousand Dances: she’s caught in a haze and then a light, a little teeny light, come through. It could be a leopard, that light, or it could be a spot of blood. It could be anything. But she hooks onto that and spirals out. And she does it within the accessible rhythms of plot, and that’s really exciting. She’s not hung up with being a woman, she just keeps extending herself, keeps telescoping language and plot."

This book is made to hit you in the feels and keep you emotional through the whole journey. The author does a fantastic job representing cultures and people that aren't prominent in books and I need more. I need more women who aren't afraid to please themselves, boys who fall for boys and girls, and most importantly I need more Jewish representation. It is all here in this wonderful book and anyone who needs a trip down emotion lane should pick it up!

That's how you do a superhero movie!
I've always known Wonder Women as a huge icon in the DC franchise however with limited spotlight in over the last 20 years she was kinda off my radar - until I saw this! The movie is fantastic, It's got a great story (believable) and just the right amount of superhero action to appreciate what they are capable of. Gal and the team did a superb job and I can even go as far to say it is probably one if my all time favourite superhero movies. Loved it

"One of those records that caught me at the right minute. As you know, I was a huge fan of Spiders-era Bowie. I was distraught when they split, but I followed Ronson's solo career. He was a little bit more mainstream; these were stunning songs. Very French, somehow - it had that 'I'm wondering around down the docks in Amsterdam' kind of vibe! It also has the second greatest guitar solo of all time on 'Women' and in between you have these fantastic ballads like 'The Empty Bed', a stunning song. His lead playing on that record is just incredible."

Great performances let down by the pace
I read Little Women quite a few years ago, and other than remembering the basic plot details, I went into this film with barely any preconceptions. And for the most part, it does quite well.

This film is all about the performances. I've always liked Saoirse Ronan and Timothee Chalamet, I think they're both charismatic and fantastic actors and any time these two are on screen in this film (either together or separately), it really is marvellous to watch. Throwing in a great turn from Florence Pugh and some wonderful support from Laura Dern, Chris Cooper, Meryl Streep and (a sadly forgettable) Emma Watson, the acting in this is pretty stellar

The major problem however is the pacing. The plot is interesting, but it's let down by the plodding dreadfully slow pace and a just over 2 hour film feels like a lifetime. It's such a shame, as had this been sped up a little or had a little of the runtime shaved off, it'd be a truly fantastic period drama.
