Another great Discworld story
Terry Pratchett does it again with yet another great Discworld novel. Although the main protagonist Esk can be a little grating at times, Equal Rites introduces a fantastic character in Granny Weatherwax and tells an age old familiar story of men versus women, with a fantasy spin.

Fantastic stories and Hosts!!
Love this podcast! Love that it's hosted by women! Love the Hosts, they're funny, personable, and they make these stories interesting so that even the most gruesome are told with such enthusiasm and creativity that cringing us kept to a minimum. I loved every second of the podcast. By the end of season 1 I was ready to donate! I wish these wonderful women and their loved ones nothing but success! Thank you for the stories ladies!

Zac Efron's Ted Bundy (2 more)
The suspense
The prison scene at the end
Dang. I tell you what. Zac Efron was absolutely fantastic and equally as chilling as Ted Bundy. The writers and directors painted Bundy in a way that made me feel somewhat sympathetic for him and his fiance, despite knowing what he did to those women. The ending scene at the prison was absolutely chilling. Fantastic directing and acting. Zac Efron and Lily Collins shined, and I would go as far as to say that was Zac Efron's best performance ever.

Dull and rather pointless
There was very little that was beguiling about this film apart from the usual fantastic performances from Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrell.
The premise of the film surrounds the American Civil War, in which an injured soldier (Farrell) is taken in quite reluctantly by a group of women and young girls where Kidman is the matriarch. The mysterious circumstances of Farrell is never explicitly revealed, but he begins to attempt to worm his way into staying by charming all of the women and girls creating sexual tension in a rather repressive household.
The problem was that the film is sold as empowering to women yet it was nothing of the sort. Watching the women throw themselves at a man was rather unappealing, and to be honest the entire movie was very dull. I hear the Clint Eastwood version of the same film @The Beguiled (1971) is superb and the one to watch.

ClareR (5721 KP) rated The Household in Books
Jun 25, 2024
Stacey Halls’ latest book The Household, is set in a house for “fallen” women. This house did actually really exist: Urania Cottage was set up by, amongst others, Charles Dickens and Angela Burdett-Coutts.
Charles Dickens doesn’t feature in this book, although he is mentioned. This wonderful novel is all about the women.
Angela has been stalked for many years, her life made a misery by a man that no one takes seriously. He has been released from prison for another crime (as stalking wasn’t a crime until recently), and Angela is dreading the moment when he turns up again. And you just know it’s going to happen.
There is also the matter of a missing girl: one of the inhabitants of Urania Cottage has lost contact with her young sister, and she’s missing from the big house she worked in.
This book was captivating - the attention to historical detail, the development of the characters (particularly Angela and Martha), the way that with a modern eye, it’s supremely frustrating that young women of any class were held in such low regard. But these women do fight to get the life they want, and that must have been a reasonably rare occurrence.
This is well worth a read - another fantastic read from Stacey Halls!
