Elizabeth (429 KP) rated Behind Closed Doors in Books

I really enjoyed this book. It was a very quick read and made me want to keep reading. I did have to stop a few times to calm my nerves back down. I feel like this is a book that will stay with me for a while, it makes you think twice about trusting people. It also shows that what you see is not always what you get and if something appears too good to be true, it probably isn't true. I am very happy that I read this book and I would recommend it to anyone who wants a great thriller.

I was on a Jane Austen kick when this popped up on Net Galley. I was delightfully surprised that this novel wasnt horrible. Jane Austen retellings/rip offs are a dime a dozen, especially modern versions. However, I felt that this was a lovely retelling. I felt is held true to its inspirations and I likes Evan and Darcy almost as much as Elizabeth and Darcy. The side characters were just as meddling and frustrating too!
Bottom line, if you want a cute modern retelling that doesnt butcher the feel of the original, I highly recommend this novel.

I spent the majority of this book hating the main character! She complained about everything! I mean come on lady...get-up for an adventure! Change isn't always a bad thing!
Then I had to remind myself...it's just a book!
I loved how this one ended! At the risk of a **SPOILER** I will say...she came around in the end and did the right thing for herself & her kids!
I did however LOVE the dog! Hamish is so like my Daisy!
A solid 4 stars...it is Carole Matthews so it's a minimum of 3 for me anyway!!!

I created a video explaining my slow decent into hating this series, book by book, for your viewing pleasure:
But if you prefer a written review:
I didn’t find the constant inaccurate defining of words as annoying this time, probably because I was focused on something else. I realized at this book what a mistake I had made. Each book of this series was just going to be a slight variation of that same template, and being a completionist, I had just condemned myself to ten more books of torture.

This is my first time reading a book by Jody Hedlund (I can hear the gasps of some of you even now), but it is the truth. For some reason, I have just never picked up a book by her. A Bride of Convenience is the third book in her Bride Ships series, I was not lost at all, so the book can be read at a standalone. However, I liked this one so much I ordered the first two books already and I am eagerly anticipating their arrival

3.5 stars.
The beginning bit confused me quite a bit but when the story started properly, I got pulled into it. I loved Fin. I loved them together as a couple, though Ellie was a little dense in parts to realise what I figured from before the half way mark--that Fin wanted her as more than just a conquest.
Some bits I wasn't so fond of but I think because of Fin, I'll raise the rating half a star.
BTW my last status update should be ignored entirely. Ellie only thought she'd broken up with Fin.

I "read" this as an audiobook during my commute and really loved it. Despite not being a huge fan of audiobooks, I loved Gaiman as a reader.
