I got this audiobook from Audible through their audible originals program. I probably would have never in my life picked this up if it weren't for getting it for free. This book started off with a cute story about the main characters meeting and ends with a horrific gut wrenching ending. This is not a cute love story. This is not uplifting. It is heart wrenching but it is so beautifully done that I wasn't able to put it down.
The narrator truly put on a wonderful performance. She had a way to force you into the story & make you feel like this was a friend telling you the story.
All in all, it was good. Heart wrenching but good.

Caffeinated Fae (464 KP) rated Notorious RBG: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg in Books
Nov 12, 2018
Notorious RBG is a truly wonderful book. I never knew what Ruth Bader Ginsburg did for women until this book. She really is an inspiration. Learning about RBG was a wild ride. The things this woman has gone through is truly inspirational and I loved how much she has accomplished in her life. Reading this book inspired me to be more. I loved some of the lessons that were told and it shows how important it can be to meet in the middle and still show respect when you hold differing opinions.
All in all, if you're looking for a good biography on an inspirational woman this is the book for you.

ClareR (5726 KP) rated Heroes (Stephen Fry’s Great Mythology Volume 2 in Books
Oct 24, 2019
So, Stephen tells us about Heracles, Perseus, Jason and others that I wasn’t as familiar with, like Oedipus and Bellerophon. Honestly, this book is bursting with heroes, and whilst this sounds like a ridiculous thing to say, what I actually mean is that I didn’t feel as though they were short changed in their space. All of the heroes were given their moments of glory again: their stories were told with care, with humour and with feeling. I’m hoping more will come out of this ‘Great Mythology’ series, because I am well up for listening to more. I’ll even pick up my Audible subscription again. I just need to get through the long list of Audible books that I have first...
Anyway, I would highly recommend this book and Mythos as well, and if you can, definitely listen to the audiobook version. You won’t regret it!
David McK (3425 KP) rated The Wizard of Oz in Books

Or something similar, anyway, in the Audible Audiobook version of this story that I listened to: a bit of a sly dig, maybe, at the famous "We're off the see the wizard …" song from the Judy garland movie?
Talking about differences, in this it's magical silver shows that Dorothy wears (not ruby red), with the story making great play and numerous mentions of her having committed murder and being celebrated for the same (which is surprisingly messed up for a kids story) …
like, I'm sure, most of the rest of the population, I'm more familiar with that movie version than the original, so it's entertaining and informative to see just how close the two versions are, with the movie version (perhaps necessarily) taking in less events than this story does.
David McK (3425 KP) rated The Silent Guides in Books

I'm calling it that because I read (listened to?) the audiobook version.
Recently, I decided to give audible (or, more accurately, it's free month) a try, and this came up as one of the 'recommended first listens'. I'd heard, anecdotally, of the Chimp Paradox, even though I'd never read it so thought I would give this a listen, especially since I'd been having a hard time of late and had been feeling rather a bit of stress/was unable to 'switch off' from work.
I don't really know what I was expecting, but what wasn't clear - at least, not to me - was that most of this (say, roughly 80% worth) is actually more about raising kids and how to be a role-model to them. I don't have any.
(I do have nieces and nephews, though)
With that said, there were still some aspects that I could probably put to use in my personal life ...
