As I continue my impossible quest of reading all of James Patterson's books, this one was really good.
From the outside accidental fires are being started all over the country. But Emmy Dockery sees something different. She sees something even trained arson investigators aren't seeing. All of these fires over 50 of them, have all been started in a bedroom and the body of the person has been found at the point of origin of the fire. That is very strange, first because fires rarely start in the bedroom and second because you hardly ever find a body at the point of origin of a fire. Usually the person is trying to get away as quick as possible. As soon as Emmy is given the green light to go ahead with the investigation, she is on an all out war to find the person who is doing these heinous crimes. But this killer is really good and finding him is not going to be an easy task. Traveling all over the country, with fire investigators on full alert, will Emmy and her team be able to find the killer before he finishes another killing spree?

Anyways, I find it interesting how non-chalant Mercy is about what she is and can do. She does not seem to know much about being a "walker", but it doesn't bother her. It's the other preternatural beings who give her bits of information about her kind in well-timed accidents. She reminds me a bit of Rachel Morgan from the Kim Harrison series. (Oooh, cross-over potential...)
I also liked the complexities of the different cultures that the various preternatual beings originate from, and most expecially the impossible-to-pronounce names to match, such as Elizaveta Arkadyevna Vyshnevetskaya and Siebold Adelbertsmiter. The book was heavy on politics and violence, while light on romance, which I can appreciate in light of the storyline, but I look forward to things heating up between Mercy Thompson and her two wanna-be boyfriends, Adam and Samuel. I got a bit confused when trying to remember who's who in the cast of characters, especially since many of the lesser werewolves all tended to behave the same, and I really hope that future books will explain who or what the Gray Lords are.

Tristan is a walking accident, or accidents seem to find him. Either way he isnt sure how he is still alive after everything hes been through. Forget the ton linking him to his dead father whod gone mad, but no matter how hard he tries he cant seem to please his uncle at all. He goes with his friend Derek to a masquerade ball in hopes of forgetting all his problems but finds what hed been looking for all along.
Beth and Tristan marry even after it is revealed she is just a maid. His uncle is furious and he feels like hes been duped. Beth tries to explain she didnt set out to marry but felt an attraction to him the first time they met. She ends up helping him realize he can never please his uncle no matter how hard he tries.
Plenty of twists and turns and we get to see Henrietta again as she fights to save her brother. Also Matthew, cousin to Tristan, who gets his own storyline a few books ahead. The main storyline for Beth also continues in a further book down the series line. Another great historical read, 4 ½ stars.
