Matthew Krueger (10051 KP) rated Maverick (1994) in Movies
Jul 14, 2020 (Updated Jul 14, 2020)
Play Your Cards Right
Maverick- is a funny entertaining western with action, poker and adventure. Richard Donner does it once again.
The plot: This film update of the "Maverick" TV series finds the title cardsharp (Mel Gibson) hoping to join a poker contest with an impressive payoff. In order to enter, Maverick must first put up a large cash sum. He scams hopeful contestants Annabelle (Jodie Foster) and Angel (Alfred Molina) in a preliminary card game to win the money he needs, making enemies of both players. While trying to evade Annabelle and Angel, the crafty Maverick realizes a cunning marshal (James Garner) is also on his tail.
Many cameo appearances by Western film actors, country music stars and other actors. Including Danny Glover, Hal Ketchum, Corey Feldman, Read Morgan, Steve Kahan, Art LaFleur, Leo Gordon, Denver Pyle, Robert Fuller, Doug McClure, Henry Darrow, William Smith, Charles Dierkop, William Marshall, Dennis Fimple, Bert Remsen and Margot Kidder.
Danny Glover's cameo appearance references Donner's Lethal Weapon film series starring Glover and Gibson as cop partners. Their meeting in Maverick sees them share a moment of recognition, complete with Lethal Weapon music, and as he leaves, Glover says Roger Murtaugh's catchphrase: "I'm getting too old for this shit."
Country singers also cameo including Carlene Carter, Waylon Jennings, Kathy Mattea, Reba McEntire, Clint Black, Vince Gill and Janis Gill.
Its a funny entertaining western. A must watch.

Shelle Perry (66 KP) rated The Accidental World in Books

The Accidental World is one of the more unique stories I have read of late
The Accidental World is one of the more unique stories I have read of late. Ethan Scott is thrust into a world of intrigue in an alternate world where the only lifelines he has are the vague instructions left to him by his grandfather before his disappearance and the board game that he has played since he was a child. There are those who help him along the way, but there are always more questions than answers and he has a role to play.
On the surface this seems like a tropey Y A novel with an unlikely hero who is thrust into the role of savior (yada yada), but it is really such a well written imaginative world that comparisons like that fall by the wayside in favor of well paced and exciting adventure. The book is packed full of interesting characters who engage the reader full throttle. In my mind it played out just like a movie, especially the gaming sequences and the action near the end.
The cliffhanger ending has me wanting to return to this world and these characters to see what happens next.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

My first twisted tale of the series and I wasn’t disappointed.
It did take a little while for me to get my head around that Wendy had never been to Never Land in the first place as I kept going back to the original telling where all of the Darling children joined Peter Pan in Never Land for an adventure. Once I had got my head around it not happening like that for the sake of this story, I did thoroughly enjoy it.
Tink is one of my favourite Disney characters, her sassiness and mischievousness has always drawn me to her and I’m glad there was so much more of it in this book.
While I’m fully aware that part of the book was finding Peter Pan, I felt that it took far too long to find him and then the main action in the book was over extremely quickly. The author spent a lot of time describing the landscapes, creatures and plants in the lead up, but when it got to the climax of the story it just seemed to be glossed over completely.
Overall, it was well written and I love anything Disney, so I will definitely be looking at reading more of these Twisted Tales, but I think my favourite alternative Disney series is still the Villains series currently! Hopefully I will come to love this series as much as that in the future.

Merissa (13169 KP) rated A Siren's Finale: Part Three (Aria & the Seven Seas #3) in Books
Dec 5, 2022
What a finale!
A SIREN'S FINALE concludes Aria's story. And what a story it has been! Aria finally has her Pod together when the sea witch makes an appearance. Come on, we've all been waiting for it! Will Aaron get what he deserves? Will Aria get her HEA?
I have LOVED this trilogy. It is full of action and adventure, with plenty of connection between the main characters, and smut in between the sheets. Just what I needed! I will say though, at one point near the end, my heart was in my mouth and it wasn't for any in the Pod but Aria's papa. Good grief, Ms Blythe, I thought you were killing me then!
Fast-paced, with a great supporting cast, this was a fitting end to the trilogy. I'm hoping for more as I really want to find out what's going on with Ariella. And, of course, anytime I get to return to Wildeward is a good thing by me. I need to check in on the Alpha's Lodge, after all.
If you like things spicy and don't want to choose, then I HIGHLY recommend any book by Gwyneira Blythe!

Merissa (13169 KP) rated The Snow Wolf (Wolves Ever After #1) in Books
Jul 10, 2023
THE SNOW WOLF is the first book in the Wolves Ever After series. Now, apparently, this is a spin-off from Ms Holland's Dragons series which I haven't read. I personally don't believe it necessary to have read those to enjoy this, but I will now be reading those anyway, as I love the world they are set in.
Myra hasn't had it easy and has isolated herself from everyone, living her life as a weaver in solitude. Sterling is looking for someone though, and thinks she can help. Being wolf-kin gives him an advantage because he can pick up on signs Myra tries so hard to hide from everyone else. What follows is a story full of action and adventure, with the slow blossoming of love along the way. I loved that neither of them tried to hide how they felt, which could have led to unnecessary arguments or drama. Instead, they are both there for each other, content to see where it goes.
Full of interesting characters and a storyline that will leave you wanting the next book, this was a great read that I thoroughly enjoyed and have no hesitation in recommending. Another winner by this author!

Merissa (13169 KP) rated Becoming Brooklyn in Books
Jul 13, 2021 (Updated Jul 17, 2023)
BECOMING BROOKLYN is a standalone novel that has the potential for a series. A series I really hope happens!
Brooklyn is a 9/11 baby, her father died in the terrorist attack. During a memorial service, terrorists attack again and Brooklyn, along with five others, are told the impossible -- that their parents had superpowers and worked with the government to stop terrorists. They are given the choice to follow in their footsteps. But things aren't always as they appear and they all have hard lessons to learn.
This was a great story. It is filled with action, adventure, and a touch of romance. I loved how the story panned out, and how they worked together, which made the ending even more jaw-dropping.
The characters are all well thought out and play to their own strengths. Told from Brooklyn's point of view, obviously, we learn more about her, but through her eyes, we learn about the others too. Brilliant storytelling!
I don't know if there are any plans for a sequel or series, but I would love to hear more from Brooklyn and see where the future takes her.
A fantastic contemporary superpower novel that I have no hesitation in recommending.
